Amnesty Bustop ad

This bus stop ad, recently erected in Hamburg, Germany, changes whether or not someone's looking at it. Using a built-in camera with eye-tracking technology, it can tell exactly when someone is checking it out.

It uses this to get across an anti-domestic abuse message. When no one is looking, it shows a man hitting his wife. But when you look right at it, it changes to a picture of the couple looking happy and normal. A cool piece of tech used to powerful effect.

It's just a dope sample...let's move on:

RIP MJ

Nelson George writes:

Orson Wells' rich, brilliant & ultimately doomed character Charles Foster Kane died, alone and unloved, in his California mansion. At the time of his passing he was a deformed, corrupt and far removed from the genius displayed in creating his mass media empire. In the aftermath of Michael Jackson's I couldn't help but think of 'Kane..' Michael's Zanadu had been stripped from him a few years back, leaving him wandering from rental to rental home, such as the one he died in in Los Angeles yesterday.

Michael was prepping to try to recapture his once elevated status with 50 sold out shows at London's massive O2 arena. But that was not to be. In fact I believe that the stress of preparing for that show, after his long performing layoff, played a role in his demise. With the music, videos and event tour that supported 'Thriller' Michael re-invented the art of the blockbuster album, creating an international stardom that endures. And, sadly, for the last twenty five years of his life Michael was in a losing battle with himself, trying to match that magical year even as the culture changed, the record industry imploded, and his personal demons ruined his reputation.

At several points in his life Michael revolutionized pop culture. He lead the first black teen group to cross racial lines. With Quincy Jones, he produced a trio of albums (Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad) that reinvented the rules for black artists musically and in terms of international appeal. The videos, grandiose, elaborate and full of wonderful dancing are still the gold standard for the merging of music & image. Along with Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, and so many other media legends, Michael made the '80s a golden age for black pop culture.

I, like so many of you, grew up with Michael Jackson. With my mother, sister and family friends I attended the Jackson Five's first Madison Square Garden show. Over the years I attended eight Jacksons/Michael Jackson shows and spend countless hours over the last forty years thinking about and, often writing about that man. In fact a book I did about him, The Michael Jackson Story, in 1984 jump started my career. It was first book and first exposure to the media machine that both celebrated, reported about and, ultimately, ripped him apart.

It’s hilarious how one sided much of the immediate commentary about the man has been. Sinner or saint? More apt is artist and sinner. People want to simplify a truly complex life. We have to be sophisticated enough to acknowledge that greatness and a touch of evil dwelled in the man. I've always believed that transcendent art emanates from the purest, most evolved parts of our soul. But that highly spiritual achievement doesn't absolve us of our daily misdeeds. To simply brand him a smooth criminal, as some have, or to overlook his tragic nature, as have others, is to deny his humanity. The meaning of Michael Jackson's life -- as a black man, a sexual being, a abused and abusing adult -- will be interpreted to fit the prejudices of the speaker. His music -- it speaks volumes.

I'm not a coffee snob but I'm always on the hunt for something/ANYTHING to make a better homemade espresso - so I just ordered one of these.

I've spent a wedge of cash on espresso makers in all shapes, forms and value from the sublime to the ridiculous over the years but I always come back to my much-loved, conventional stove-top Bialetti Moka...It's been that way since I could toddle (part-Italian upbringing see) so I'm looking forward to this...

iPhone Baseband Freedom...again!

The bug used by Yellowsn0w to inject code in iPhone 3G 2.2 was shut-down by apple in the last iPhone firmware - rendering yellowsn0w unusable for unlocking. However iPhone dev team once again found a new hole in iPhone 3G 3.0 to inject similar payload code used in yellowsn0w and the new soft tool to unlock iPhone 3G OS 3.0 is named as Ultrasn0w.

Ultrasn0w iPhone 3G 3.0 Unlock tool will be released on *Friday 19th, till that time you may upgrade your iPhone 3G to firmware 3.0 but need to wait for unlock till Ultrasn0w is released.

Real Racing On The App Store

I’ve found most iPhone racing games somewhat unappealing. While accelerometer tilt controls translate great to driving controls, they’ve all just felt a little flat. EA’s recently released Need For Speed Undercover [App Store] came close to quenching my thirst for a great racer on the platform, but fell short for a number of reasons, in my eyes. Poor AI combined with races that were hard to lose had me quickly growing bored of the game, despite its doing a great job at capturing the Need For Speed feel on the small screen.

Real Racing is an entirely different animal. In my previous hands-on, first impressions post I mentioned how great the AI is, and countless races later I still feel this is Real Racing’s greatest asset. The AI opponents play how they should play; they’re not mindless drones following a simple line around the track, they’re extremely competitive racers that just flat out won’t put up with you trying to cut in front of them, or leaving yourself open on a turn.

It really feels like you’re playing against human players. It’s crazy. Just like on XBOX Live, how you would ram someone’s rear corner as they pass you to try to make them lose control, the AI in Real Racing does the exact same thing. It’s a night and day experience from other iPhone racers that I’ve played where you’re largely ignored by the slow moving AI opponents and the difference this makes in the overall feel of the game is hard to put into words.

While Real Racing also includes quick race and time trial game modes, the meat of the game is in its career mode. Also available is a local WiFi multiplayer mode, and online tournaments utilizing Firemint's Cloudcell system for score tracking. (Also like previous Cloudcell games, full Twitter, FaceBook and even YouTube replay uploading is implemented.)

I fully admit I was as skeptical as everyone else when the trailers were released, but Real Racing is something you really have to see to believe. Firemint honestly deserves some kind of award for the technical accomplishments made with the graphics engine powering Real Racing. It runs at a higher framerate on my iPhone 3G than most 3D games at a level of detail that is comparable to what you would normally see on the PSP. I can’t even imagine how this game will play on the upcoming iPhone 3G S.

Real Racing defaults to the cockpit view and, with a pair of headphones on, the only game that even comes close to rivaling the immersion experienced is 2XL Supercross [App Store]. Instead of any kind of on-screen HUD, your speed, position in the race, current time, and other relevant data are displayed on the steering wheel and pillar mounted gauges. One thing that I would really like to see added is some kind of mini-map. While I appreciate their HUD-less interface, a mini-map would be extremely helpful in learning the tracks and allow you to more accurately determine when to brake, approaching corners.

All in all though, it is a mobile game, and one of the most detailed and complete racing experiences offered on the App Store, so I have a hard time getting too worked up over not being able to add turbo boost, spoilers, and custom exhausts to my cars. The racing experience in Real Racing is unrivaled, and that's what counts.
